As part of World Viral Hepatitis Day, we review some of the achievements and challenges of medicine counteracting the impact of hepatitis A, B and C.
Today, 1 million people die from viral hepatitis annually. The cause of death is often the result of liver complications which include liver cancer, liver cirrhosis (57%), and primary liver cancer (78%), because of HBV or HCV infection. The biggest challenge continues to be that most infected people are unaware that they have the virus. When diagnosed, they could be facing a serious health risk due to the passage of time between when they contracted the infection and when the infection was discovered.
To address the panorama of these viral conditions, we interviewed the prominent infectologist, Dr. Javier Morales, who was the first infectologist in Puerto Rico to diagnose a patient with HIV on the island. Dr. Morales has a long history with the study of infectology in Puerto Rico.
Led by Dr. Eddie Ortiz, Chief Strategy and Clinical Officer of Provider Network Solutions, Dr. Morales received us at his office in Santurce, where he also uses different research protocols to benefit various patient populations. The following is an interview between these two extraordinary health professionals.
